Spend seven days above the Arctic Circle, riding through snow-covered forests, crossing frozen rivers on horseback and watching the northern lights from the saddle.

The Arctic is the whole point here. Days are built around horses, sleigh rides, traditional saunas, archery and snowshoeing through untouched forest. Evenings are spent by the fire. Nights are spent waiting for the sky to move.

It is a completely different kind of wilderness from our South American trips. Quieter, slower, and just as unforgettable.

This is a single February 2027 departure, capped at six riders. Everything is organised for you from the airport onwards.

Why Lapland

A landscape that makes everything go quiet.

Deep winter in Lapland is not a backdrop you ride past. It is the thing itself. Snow swallows sound, the forest closes in around the trail, and the light stays low and blue for most of the short day.

You ride out through trees heavy with snow, cross rivers that have frozen solid, and come back to a fire and a sauna. In between there are sleigh rides, lunches cooked in a traditional kota, archery in the snow and long afternoons that nobody is rushing.

Then the sky. Some nights it stays still. Some nights it moves, and you watch it from the back of a horse. Nobody can promise the aurora, but we ride out looking for it twice during the week.

The Week

What you will experience

  • Guided forest rides through snow-covered trees
  • Two northern lights rides after dark
  • A sunset ride at blue hour
  • Horse-drawn sleigh rides, including one at sunset
  • Lunch cooked in a traditional kota
  • Snowshoeing through untouched forest
  • Archery lessons in the snow
  • Traditional sauna ceremonies
  • A drum relaxation session
  • A group of no more than six riders

The Horses

The horses and riding

You ride Finnhorses, the native Finnish breed, sure-footed in deep snow and used to working in cold that would stop most horses.

The riding here is different from our South American trips. Days are short this far north, so rides are shorter too, usually around an hour, and there are several of them across the week rather than one long day in the saddle. That makes this trip genuinely open to beginners.

Where You Stay

A working Arctic ranch

You stay at the ranch for all six nights, with every meal included from the welcome dinner on the first evening to breakfast on the last.

Evenings happen around the fire and in the sauna, which is part of daily life here rather than a treatment you book. It is warm, simple and built for winter.

Day by Day

Your 7-day itinerary

The schedule may shift with the weather, the light and the horses. In deep winter that is normal, and it is part of the experience.

01
Arrival in Rovaniemi
Transfer from Rovaniemi airport to the ranch, check in and settle into your room. A welcome dinner by the fire closes your first evening in the Arctic.
02
Into the Arctic
After breakfast you meet your horse and get introduced to life at the ranch, then head out on a guided forest ride through the snow-covered trees. Free time and lunch follow, then a horse sleigh ride at sunset. The day ends with a traditional sauna ceremony and a drum relaxation session.
03
Winter exploration
A horse-drawn sleigh ride after breakfast, with lunch cooked in a traditional kota. The afternoon is yours, followed by snowshoeing through untouched forest. Then the northern lights ride, the one you will talk about for the rest of your life.
04
Slow Arctic living
Archery lessons in the snow after breakfast, lunch at the ranch, then a guided forest ride. Dinner and sauna afterwards. A slower day built around learning something new and being present in the landscape.
05
The Arctic ride day
A morning ride through the winter landscape, then lunch and rest at the ranch. In the late afternoon we ride again at blue hour, when the light in Finnish Lapland is unlike anywhere else on earth.
06
Final moments
More archery after breakfast, lunch, and a free afternoon. We share a final dinner together, then ride out one last time under the northern lights for a last chance to see the sky move.
07
Departure
Breakfast at the ranch, then the transfer back to Rovaniemi airport.

Good to Know

Cold, food and what to bring

How cold it gets. February in Rovaniemi usually sits between about −5°C and −15°C during the day, and the coldest nights can drop to around −20°C. It is a dry cold rather than a damp one, which makes it far more comfortable than the numbers suggest, and every ride is followed by a fire or a sauna. Daylight is short at this time of year, roughly seven hours during the week of the trip, which is exactly why the rides are shorter and the evenings matter.

What to bring. You will receive a detailed packing list closer to the departure date, covering what to wear for riding in the cold and what you need for the evenings outside.

Food and dietary requirements. All meals are included, from the welcome dinner to breakfast on your last morning. Most dietary requirements can be catered for, as long as you let us know in advance.

Transfers. Airport transfers in Rovaniemi are included in both directions. Flights to and from Rovaniemi (RVN) are not.

Honestly

Is this trip right for you?

This is for you if you

  • Have always wanted to see the northern lights
  • Love horses, snow and quiet places
  • Are new to riding, or want short rides rather than long days
  • Would like to travel alone within a small group
  • Want a fully organised week without a rigid schedule
  • Are happy being properly cold and properly warm again

This is probably not for you if

  • You want long, fast days in the saddle
  • You are looking for a luxury hotel or spa
  • You need a guaranteed sighting of the aurora

The northern lights are weather and solar activity, not a scheduled event. We ride out looking for them twice, and we are honest that some weeks the sky simply stays quiet.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can beginners join?
Yes. This trip is open to all levels. The rides are around an hour each and guided throughout, on Finnhorses that are calm and used to the conditions.
Can I come alone?
Yes. The group is capped at six riders, so you get to know everyone quickly over the rides, the meals and the evenings by the fire.
Will we definitely see the northern lights?
Nobody can promise that. The aurora depends on solar activity and cloud cover. We ride out after dark twice during the week specifically to look for it, and February in Lapland is one of the better times to try, but a quiet sky is always possible.
How much riding is there?
Several rides across the week, usually around an hour each. Days are short this far north, so the week is built around shorter rides plus sleigh rides, snowshoeing, archery and sauna rather than long days in the saddle.
Are meals included?
Yes. Every meal is included, from the welcome dinner on arrival to breakfast on your departure day.
How do I get there?
Fly into Rovaniemi (RVN). Transfers between the airport and the ranch are included in both directions. Flights themselves are not included.
How cold does it get?
February days in Rovaniemi are usually around −5°C to −15°C, and the coldest nights can reach about −20°C. It is a dry cold, which feels a lot easier than it sounds, and there is always a fire or a sauna waiting at the end of a ride.
What should I bring?
You will receive a detailed packing list closer to the date, including what to wear for riding in the cold and what to bring for the evenings outside.
Can you cater for dietary requirements?
Most dietary requirements can be accommodated. Just let us know in advance so the ranch can plan for it.
What is the cancellation policy?
Cancel before 1 December 2026 and you receive a full refund minus a €150 administration fee. On or after 1 December 2026 payments are non-refundable, because the trip costs will already have been committed, but you may transfer your place to someone else if you find a suitable replacement.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes. Personal travel insurance is not included and you should make sure yours covers medical care and horseback riding for the full trip.
